Kevin Waterson, President of the Swamp Bats, Sara Pelkey, the Operations Manager and Nick Morrow, one of this year's interns filled us all in on the latest happenings with the Swamp Bats. Sara explained the reading with Ribby program - now in its 15th year and involved with students at 17 schools. They read for 20 minutes on 18 different days and are awarded with a shirt and a chance to join the Swamp Bats at a game. A fun way to encourage reading. June 6, 2018: Don Flibotte had many good things to say about the 2017 Kiwanis Scholarship recipient from Monadnock Regional High School. Summer Pouliot just completed her first semester at UNH and had outstanding grades! She took a very active role in the Key Club at MRHS and hopes to join the Circle K Club at UNH in the fall. Congratulations Summer - it was wonderful to give you your scholarship check and we wish you continued success in your studies.


Peter Poanessa presents the Walldogs Magical Mystery Tour project to members - 05/23/2018

We had a most interesting speaker this week. Peter Poanessa, owner of Signworks, spoke about the “Walldogs Project”. Planned for June 19-23, 2019, nearly 200 artists/sign makers will converge on Keene to paint murals on buildings in downtown Keene. Their goal is to paint 15 historical murals over 4 days. The murals will depict historical events/people from Keene. While most of the mural topics will be discussed and voted on in September, two are already “locked in” – Jonathan Daniels and the importance of the railroad to Keene. These murals are designed to last 50-75 years. The 4 day event next June will involve lots of fun activities including a Wednesday night...

Joseph Antosiewicz came to our meeting and shared his enthusiasm for stamp collecting. He had a very interesting presentation and gave us the background on many of the stamps in his personal collection. Joseph is a longstanding collector and member of the Brattleboro Stamp Club. Bob Carter, the store manager, shared the history of the Co-op with our members! - 04/25/2018

Bob Carter, the store manager of the Monadnock Food Co-op shared the history of the Co-op with our Club members at a meeting in April. The planning for the Co-op began in 2010 and it opened with 56 employees in 2013. After an initial six months that showed slow growth, the co-op has gone on to a consistent double digit growth in sales each year. At the five year anniversary, there are now 95 employees and plans are in the works to expand the store and the size of the parking lot. They plan to increase the store size from the current 1,300 square feet to 6,200 square feet. The Co-op has added local vendors of all sizes. Chris Coates tells the Club about the Keene Education Foundation

The Mission of the Keene Education Foundation (KEF) is to support the overall excellence of the Keene New Hampshire School District by raising and providing funds for the benefit of its students. Chirs Coates has been a School Board member and was one of the individuals involved in creating the Foundation. Currently they are looking for donations to build a new playground at Wheelock School. The project will cost $90,000. They have raised about $54,000 so far and are asking the local clubs to donate if possible.

The Kiwanis Club learns of Homeless Outreach efforts in Keene from Rob Waters on March 28 - 03/28/2018

Rob Waters, the Coordinated Entry Manager, Homeless Outreach for Sullivan, Cheshire and W. Hillsboro Counties came to our morning meeting and shared his knowledge of the challenges of the Housing First program. Rob works with individuals and families both in the area shelters and with those living in the woods in our areas. His agency is able to offer help with the security deposit and first months rent. He works with local landlords. He even helps to prevent homelessness if he is aware of the need before someone is homeless. There are non interest loans available to cover some housing costs. The shelters in Keene provide temporary places for folks to stay. He is able to offer his support for...
