Heather Jasmine of Keene State College speaks to our Club about "Kids on Campus" - 02/28/2018

Heather Jasmine, the Educational Program Coordinator at the Office of Continuing Education and Extended Studies of Keene State College spoke with our Club on Wednesday February 7th. She touched on the many programs and educational opportunities that the College offers. She did focus more on the "Kids on Campus" summer program for children preschool through 8th grade. The program started 13 years ago and does a great job of bringing children in and getting them excited about learning. The one week classes are taught by teachers from local schools who use inventive ways to teach. Classes about Woodland Creatures, Blast Off to Space, Bubbles, Lego Adventures, Pirate Camp and so many more...

Kiwanis Members Learn about the Monadnock Sustainability Network - 02/04/2018

John Kondos, president of The Monadnock Sustainability Network (MSN), along with Jeff Scott and Ron Rzasa, spoke to our club about the benefits of locally owned, community supported solar initiatives. Formed in 2008, MSN is a group of business and community leaders who support sustainable living practices through education, outreach, and collective action.

The first local solar project completed by the MSN was at The Monadnock Food Co-op in March 2016. The photovoltaic (PV) panels cover the available roof area of the Co-op, converting sunlight into electricity. KSC Interim President Melinda Treadwell Shares Top Priorities - 01/17/2018

Dr. Melinda Treadwell, Interim President of Keene State College since July 2017, spoke to our club about both the challenges and success stories at the college since she took on her new role. Some of her top priorities have included: balancing the budget, "right-sizing" the faculty and staff numbers to better align with student enrollment, implementing the Granite Guarantee (free tuition to in-state needy students), adding several new degree programs, and enhancing the community service requirement for students. One of her next priorities will be focusing on the branding of the institution and fine tuning the messaging and value proposition to attract and retain prospective students....

Kiwanis Induct New Member Emily Pontbriant - 01/10/2018

We inducted another new member this Wednesday! Emily Pontbriant, who moved to Keene in the spring of 2016, became intersted in our Club when she noticed the signs around town of the events we hold for the local children. Emily has been involved in community service for many years through her previous job, and wants to continue to participate in community service through Kiwanis service projects. Welcome Emily! We are so happy to have you join our club.

Cheshire County Staff Presents Courthouse Window Restoration Project - 01/03/2018

Chris Coates, Chesire County Administrator and Cindy Rodenhauser Stewart, Director of Public Engagement and Development, enthusiastically shared news of the latest renovation project planned for the Old Cheshire County Courthouse. The Courthouse has had renovations inside since the new Courthouse was built but they are now going into Phase 2 -- restoration of the windows. They are seeking public donations for this project to match a grant they have received. Once that is completed then they will begin Phase 3 - restoration of the Cupola. Kiwanians Ring Bell for Salvation Army - 12/16/2017

Ten members of our club paired up for one hour shifts at Market Basket to ring the bells for the Keene Salvation Army on a cold December Saturday. We saw lots of happy shoppers with holiday spirit and many were generous with their change. Thank you to all who donated!

Kiwanians Bring Good Cheer With A Night of Caroling - 12/01/2017

A group of Kiwanians and family members participated in a night of caroling in our local community on December 1. The group sang at Cedarcrest Center for Children with Disabilities on Maple Avenue and then continued to Langdon Place on Arch Street. We may not have perfect pitch but we all enjoyed ourselves and spread a lot of holiday cheer!

Ryan Widzkowski, of the Granite State Independent Living Agency, spoke to our club about his role a as a Transitional Coordinator.  He works one on one with school students ages 14 to 21 who have an IEP . Ryan works with students at several high schools in our area, helping them to gain confidence and advocate for themselves. He encourages them to explore the possibilities of what they may do after high school and to look at all the possibilities. One of his goals is to help them successfully transition from school to a job or entrance to college. Ryan also holds workshops for students and invites community members to share insights on their careers and possible job opportunities. Currently...
