Thanks to all who helped make the
Annual Tree Lighting Celebration a success!
The Annual Tree Lighting Celebration held on Central Square on November 24th was truly a great event for the entire family. This is the fifth year the Kiwanis Club of Keene has planned and hosted the event. We are very grateful to Center Stage, the organization that hosted the event for at least twenty years before us, for guiding us through the first few years and for donating their star and lights!
Over 60 children and young adults from the area were involved in the festivities whether as part of one of the choirs, as a member of the brass band, doing sound effects during the reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, or serving cookies and hot chocolate to the large crowd in attendance.
We owe special thanks to our major sponsors, Fenton Family Dealerships and the Keene Monument Company. Other area businesses supported the event financially or with in-kind services. We would also like to thank the City of Keene who supported our sponsoring the event and the PEAK Radio Station for broadcasting on the Square during the event. Then of course, we extend our thanks to Santa and Mrs. Claus.
We thank the Keene Sentinel staff who came out to get pictures and wrote several articles before after our event. There will be a Thank You Ad in the Keene Sentinel recognizing everyone who helped make this evening so enjoyable for the families who came.
The Kiwanis Club of Keene is committed to sponsoring events that make a positive difference in our community. The Tree Lighting Celebration is close to our hearts and we plan to continue this effort for many years to come.
Kiwanis Car Show - A Great Family Event!
On September 16, the Kiwanis Club of Keene hosted its 6th Annual Car Show at the American Legion on upper Court Street. 77 antique and classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles were on display and hundreds of spectators came by to vote for their favorite, listen to a DJ play music from the 50's and 60's, and have a tasty burger or dog grilled by Kiwanis Club members. And, since Kiwanis is all about the kids, a children's area offered facepainting, coloring, toys, balloons and much more.
Spectators placed votes for their favorite cars, and trophies were awarded to these winners:
- 1st Place: Eddie Schatz, 1950 Chevrolet Truck 3100 series
- 2nd place: Mitch Greenwald, 1966 Ford Thunderbird
- 3rd place: Barbara Coburn, 1956 T-Bird
- Oldest vehicle: Jack Little, 1929 Model A Ford
- Motor cycle: Joe Allsop, Harley Davidson 2016 Tri-glide
The Car Show is a fundraiser with the emphasis on fun and all the money raised will support the events and projects the Kiwanis Club of Keene hosts for the children and the community throughout the year.
Kiwanis 2nd Annual Golf Tournament - a Smash Hit!
The Kiwanis Club of Keene hosted its second annual golf tournament fundraiser on Friday, August 4th, and what a success it was! We had 22 foursomes play in the tournament which is an increase of 45% from last year’s 15 foursomes. Walier Chevrolet again came on board to sponsor a new 2017 Sonic LT RS for a hole-in-one on a par-3 hole as well as three other hole-in-one prizes. We had dinner and lunch sponsors and 30 hole sponsors along with 2 golf cart sponsors. We would like to express our appreciation to all of our sponsors for their support which made this tournament possible.
We awarded prizes for the gross score winners in a men’s flight, a women’s flight and a mixed team flight with additional prizes for men and women’s longest drive and closest to the pin. Players paid $90 to $100 to golf depending on when they signed up. That included the 18 holes of golf, a cart, lunch and dinner, a gift bag with lots of nice golf related items, and free water on the links. Registration went very smoothly this year due to the willingness of the Chesterfield Lion’s Club and the Brattleboro Kiwanis Club to allow one of our co-chairs to help at their events and get some great tips on how to set up more efficiently and also improve the system to manage the winners of raffle prizes. Once the golfers started returning about 3pm for dinner, we had the 50/50 raffle and the Silent Auction items were awarded to the highest bidders. Although there are quite a few golf tournaments around Keene, our 2nd Annual event proved to be well received and enjoyed by the players.
We are planning our third annual tournament to be held once again on the first Friday of August in 2018. Make your plans now to come to the most amazing golf tournament in the region next August 3rd!
